Materials consulting

Since 1981, Putzier has been helping its clients identify optimum combinations of materials, saving them not just money but also time.

In one practical example, Putzier was commissioned to coat a stainless steel ring to seal a paper machine. We recommended the client to choose a ring made out of inexpensive structural steel and to have it completely coated. This made the ring much more economical – while the coating protected it from corrosion.

This example shows how surfaces subject to high wear can be protected or even changed by thermal spraying in order to withstand high loads. Assuming the coating materials are correctly chosen during manufacturing, the client can save a lot of money from the costs of machine downtime being permanently reduced. By allowing different materials for components and surfaces, surface engineering enables improvements in both areas.
